REFLECTION

I have always wondered if extreme statements made in ads such as "like smoking, eating meat increases the risk of heart disease and cancer" have a true effect on the viewers that make them change their current habits. For me, I believe that these statements are not really effective because more than making me want to go vegan, it makes me question the advertiser. Why would they use a child smoking and relate that to a child eating a meal of meat? In this Spinning Science Project I chose to analyze exactly why the advertiser might make this choice.

The genre of the photo essay helped me convey my argument because it allowed me to show my audience exactly what I was analyzing and for the audience to see and make an opinion of their own. Having the addition of the photo along with a short analysis, the audience is able to see the picture, make an opinion, then read my analysis to hopefully either agree or be persuaded. Since the advertisement I chose had so few words on it, I found it difficult to express the significance of these few words in my analysis. However, because this advertisement was so simple it was relatively easy to decide which three parts I was going to analyze to convey the purpose of the advertisement.

Overall, I hope that my Spinning Science project properly conveyed the message behind this advertisement as well as any controversies it may have. Regardless of how extravagent the idea of the advertisement may be, I believe that because it effectively used ethos and pathos, any audience can feel some emotion to not wanting to eat meat which is the sole purpose of the advertisement.
